A new plan

Well tomorrow is the first day of September and what with the kids returning to school and the start of the dark nights drawing in seems like a good time to try something new.

Lately I have been a bit cheesed off with the amount of UFO's lurking around my room. There are umpteen new quilts I want to make - every day my list gets longer - new quilts in magazines and especially in Blogland. These quilts are calling to me but I cannot ignore the MANY abandoned quilts I have so I have been thinking ( god help us all - lol ).

From tomorrow I am launching my "Quilt of the Month". Briefly put this means that I will dig out one UFO and work on it as much as I can for that month. Now I'm not saying that's all I will do as I know I would never stick to that and there will be other things I need and want to do. But what I plan is to have this UFO out in the open and whenever I get chance I will do a bit. I will show photos at the start of the month and at the end to see what progress I have made. Who knows I may even get something finished ?

So Septembers Quilt of the Month is as follows.

Originally it was like this

then after deciding I didn't like where it was heading it ended up like this. What a lot of unpicking !!

Anyway I thought it needed an injection of something to jazz it up a little and now it looks like this. I love that lime green.

It has sat in a basket for a while so now it's time to do something about it. This is English Paper Piecing so will be great for picking up in odd moments.

Do you see the start of the dark blue round the edges ? I think this will work.

There are 4 variations of blocks here and I intend to make up a few more then start joining together.

The hexagons are quite big so are not too fiddly. After posting this I will cut some more papers ready.

Anyone fancy joining in with this - feel free. I may put a side bar of links if anyone is interested. I know there are other lovely ladies doing a finish of the month but for me this is just an idea to make some progress on larger quilts.
And definitely next post I will show the one I am preparing for hand-quilting throughout the winter months.

Have fun xx

It seems the year for it. Every quilter I know is trying to get the UFOs done and all the non-quilters are saying the same about their projects. Maybe we are all at that certain age where time seems to get shorter and shorter!! Anyway, I like you 'monthly' plan. I'm having trouble with all the other stuff on my plate. If that would go away, then I could get some quilting done. I keep saying, I need a houseboy!

An excellent idea! I've toyed with various methods of focusing my attention to get certain projects done and it's definitely a challenge for me, too.

Your hexagons are so pretty! I think the green was a very good choice. I am looking forward to seeing how it progresses!

What a great idea! I've kind of done the same but it is only in my head... think I'll take your idea of a monthly project and run with it. Not sure I'll get much done with 2 little ones but progress is progress!

Love your hexagons and the idea of working on a UFO per month. I think I'll join you and try to complete some of those UFO's. Take care.

I'd love to join up but I know that I'd never do enough to make it worthwhile. However, I do have a similar hexagon project in progress. I have made random 'flowers' and edged them with light blue hex's. I was aiming to edge once again with dark blue but couldn't picture the effect. Your picture has helped me to see what the result would be like and I'm happy to press ahead with it now. So thank for that and good luck with your challenge.

I sure am going to enjoy watching but I'll not be able to join in publicly. I am not so disciplined as all that. BUT, I might just play along as a "side" gig. :)

...gosh I remember when you had to do that unpicking and I was heart broken for you. It seemed so painful but you did it and it turned out just fine. No trauma. :)

Good luck with the hexagons. I do so admire the results, but I am too imaptient. The lime green is just the right note!

That was a fun post to read...following the stages of this quilt in progress. Are you enjoying the peace and quiet in your house...or missing the energy and noise??

I thought the hexagons looked fine, but you are right, they look better with the green added.

the green is stunning.....really adds some pizzazz!! great idea - finishing long unfinished projects is something I plan to do once I have a plan...LOL....meaning once I have sorted them into some sort of order and actually decided which ones will never be finished for a variety of reasons....and then I can start on finishing the ones worth finishing.....!

I agree that you've made the right choice with the lime green. It's perfect.
Working on UFOs is a noble project, and I absolutely need to work on them -- as soon as I find where they're all hidden.

I love the colours you are using, the blues and then the lime together with it :)

You know, that is exactly kind of what I do in my head...I plan which projects I will work on which months. I don't always finish the project, and I don't even have a finish in my plans - but just that I will work on it. I like your hexagons, both before and after the lime green. This is a quilt on my to do list for some day, just not now.

I am loving the lime green around those hexes. I adore hexes and have never made one ever. Maybe after I finish the Dear Jane and Baltimore quilts. :0)

Hi Andrea good to see you again. I hope your new UFO plan works out for you. I'm also planning to do a lot of hand quilting in the coming months.
