A little while ago Mereth showed a quilt she had made which she called Feathered Crosses. You know when you absolutely love a pattern and can't stop thinking about it ? Well I fell in love with this pattern and asked Mereth a few questions about size etc. She very kindly gave the background story to the quilt and yesterday gave directions for making the block. Completely ignoring everything else that was calling my name ( boring stuff like cleaning, dust and things like that ) I made a sample block.
I really want to make a whole quilt with this but for now can't decide on colours. I may make each block completely different for a scrappy or I'm leaning towards something a bit more controlled but not sure what ! So thanks Mereth - I'm very grateful !!
I had a little visit to the fabric warehouse this week and got a few bargains. As many of you know quilting fabric is expensive in UK so when I see something I like at a good price I get it. I only went for a few reels of thread but ended up buying about 12 yards of fabric. This one is my best bargain -
It is a Moda fabric and is a lot darker than the photo shows - a real midnight blue. I may even make my Feathered cross quilt with this as the background. It was at the ridiculously low price of 89p a yard.
I also got these -
My books also came from Amazon.com. The UK Amazon didn't stock these so I ordered from the States. I was quoted a delivery date of 21st September but they were both here by the 5th. Not had time to read them properly but will soon put that right. I love Judy's quilts so had to order that one and I love pieced borders and got the other for ideas.
My other big news this week is that after being made redundant 6 months ago my darling hubby - Jason starts a new job on Monday. His previous company went bankrupt owing us a lot of money so things have been a bit of a struggle. But now, he is excited about his new job and he will be out from under my feet - lol ! Well done Love !
Happy, happy, happy !!

I have to ask, Do you ever sleep? Always busy doing sdomething, love your block, and what great finds at the wharehouse. Congrats to your dh on the job, that must be a huge relief to you both and a pleasure for you..*s*
Such good news about your DH. Lovely fabric
kids! that posted before I was finished LOL. Great block too and the books look interesting, you will be busy!!!
Such good news about the job!!! Loads of releif I am sure. I know when Sweet Hubby was home for a week it was tough! Your feathered cross quilt will be spectacular!! Love the fabrics!
You sounds like one inspired lady, between books, patterns and fabric you've got lots to play with! I have to ask...where on earth do you go to find fabric at 89p! I smell a field trip coming on :o)
Wow, your blocks are SO PRECISE! The feathered cross is a real stunner.
I actually think the colors you used are excellent, too. You don't sound happy with the colors, but I think that this combination, with maybe a slightly bluer center square, would make for an amazing full-sized quilt!
Well they say good things come in threes. I think you just about used two doses up today!
Congrats to your hubby. Your block looks great too.
At 89p a yard I would have bought the whole bolt (maybe you did) - what a bargain! Glad to hear that things are looking up with your husband's job.
Jeepers, and we complain about prices here in Canada. You got a great deal. Glad to hear about your DH. Insecurity is never a good time.
Andrea - that is terrific news about your husband's new job - my DH was made redundant three times in as many years and we started to feel like we had a target on our heads. To be honest as common as it is in this day and age without the stigma which used to be attached to it when it happened to my father when I was young it still leaves you with a massive knock to the old confidence - hopefully he can put it all behind him and look onwards and upwards and you can ease off on the strong supportive role and get back to some semblance of normality
Congratulations to DH on getting the new job!
I love your Feathered Crosses block. I can see why you fell in love with it. It is such a pretty pattern.
Good bargains you found on that fabric. I don't blame you for buying it.
That's an unusual and interesting block. It would look great with that background fabric. Good news about the new job.
Hi Andrea, just popping over to say "hello" and thank you for stopping by and leaving such a nice comment..*VBS* Always nice to see a new face.
Your quilts are just lovely...you did such a great job on the one for Joan..I'll bet she loved it!
And great fabric finds also. It must be hard to have fabric so high priced in the UK. We are very lucky here in the States.
Fun to see that you have learned to keep your scraps..LOL Hugs, Finn
Woohoo!! Lookin' good there with that block! I'll be really interested to watch your progress on this one, It's not the quickest pattern to make but I think the results are worth it.
And I love a good bargain, glad you could do some stash building without the guilt of the prices. Got to grab it when you see it.
I hope Jason likes his job, that's great news for you all.
BRILLIANT bargains on the fabrics. In the UK we have to buy it when we see it at good prices :)
Great news about the work for your DH. I do believe that the price in UK are the same as here so if you come across a bargain like that you cannot ignore it.
Just found your blog and read your prior postings. So enjoy it. Great pictures and instructions. I'll be back.
I always order my books on the UK amazon and I was waiting for this Judy's book. This time I tink I can't wait and I will order it from USA.
That is a lovely block you made using Mereth's pattern. Lucky you, with the fabric bargains.
Such good news for your husband too. We have been down that road, it is so hard!
That is a fun block! What size?? I can't wait to see what a whole quilt-full will look like, if you do go that route. I love your fabric finds, as well...they look lovely together.
It's great to hear loads of good news in one blog! Why can't they feature things like this on the tv news! lol - my husband would have a fit with quilting on the national news! But he would be very peased about your husband's news. Redundancy has not happened to us (fingers crossed) but I know what a huge blow it can be. Love the block. Looking forward to seeing the shapes it makes when set together. I live near Jane, so if you let us know where the warehouse is, we'll come over together! We have a warehouse near us, but £3 a yard is about the lowest it gets, which is still a bargain, but not to compare with 89p! I have a copy of 'Pieced Borders' and it's getting very worse for wear as it is so inspirational. I look at it time after time. Enjoy!
Congratulations to your hubby! Hope all goes well.
Neat block!
Lovely fabrics, good bargain...89p a yard! Gongrats to your dh on his new job!
I really like your Feathered Crosses block. It would be a stunning quilt, I think. Good for your DH and him getting a new job! And, congrats on all the great fabric you got too!
The block looks wonderful...love the idea of making a scrappy quilt with it! I need to know where you shop! I've been in fabric sticker shock since I got here! (not that I need any...it is just the thought!)
Here's hoping your DH really likes his new job.
I'm so pleased to hear your husband found a job. My husband was out of work for 9 months a few years ago, so I can relate to all of the emotions you've expressed.
What a nice thing you did for your friend Joan. I was truly touched you would do that and so quickly! I'm fairly new to blogging and I told my husband, I have met the nicest people blogging. You are an inspiration. I am trying to finish my step-mother's half finished quilt she left when she passed away. It was to be for her daughter. I know what you mean by coming into the kitchen when the meal is half cooked and trying to finish cooking it. It's a fun challenge, but I could use a deadline because there are so many other projects that do have a time limit that keep taking me away from it. Thanks for your motivation it gave me to get back to it.
